The Lemur is a top of the range control surface for audio and media applications, that breaks from the prior art on several grounds. Its major innovation consists in its brilliant modular graphic interface concept and its exclusive multitouch sensor technology.

run riot records

Posted in music profile on October 24th, 2007 by scntfc

while mainstream rap music (i still refuse to call it hip hop) continues to mine its way towards insignificance while somehow still dominating the american mindset, any real innovation in beatmaking is coming from the fringes. in one particular case, those innovative fringes are scattered about the northwest like a strategical line of defense around all of cascadia (with one satellite operative in nyc). under the guidance of label founder kitimat, the movement has been dubbed run riot records and extends from the forests of b.c. to the jail cells of multnomah county. the current run riot clip is loaded as such: kitimat, gouseion, selector pointblank, arius blaze, vincent parker, audient and nuisant. while we could simply give you capsule reviews of each artist as they stand alone, what is so unique in this situation is the cohesiveness of the roster as a whole.

I caught this over at rhizome.org. Its a heads up about remixtheory.net, a blog by new.media artist Edwardo Navas who differentiates between “remix culture and remix proper”. So, if you are the thinking man’s turntablist, have a blogroll:

Ok, so i couldnt think of the first 1,000 but here’s 2 for you.

 1. DJ Babu at The War Room This Saturday

2. DJ Spinderella at The War Room This Saturday

Before you throw the hate stick at me, let me es-plain. I went to see Babu with Cut  n’ Kandy about this time last year. I’m a HUGE Beat Junkies fan. So my dumb ass sat (read stood) among the Sea Of Suckers the War Room to get a chance to see One of my favorite Turntablist - Babu skratch for a bit…

What did i get instead? 4 hours of waiting for nothing to happen… thats right, i waited until 1am and no freakin’ Babu no freakin Kandy… NOTHIN’! I left because i couldnt stand the typical War Room folks and not to mention no one seemed to know who the hell Babu was in the first place (i asked a few people).

I later found out that Babu was there and DID preform. He was just in the back with Kandy doing a bunch of Beat Junkie Nose Kandy and got to high to preform.. But ended up doing a very short set with one of the memebers of Dilated Peoples.

Oh yeah.. Number 2 - Do you even need a reason!? 1. she was never a DJ and 2. She was never a producer… Though she was the hottest out of the 3…. though, thats not saying much, is it.

*Grumble..

DJing at the word level

Try this jazz out. You write out some text. It searches a catalog of tagged sound clips, arranging performances of each word into a sound montage. If it doesn’t have a word you wrote in the database, it tries to break it up and shorten its clips. Supercool.

brian eno (musical innovator) vs. will wright (time suck innovator)

Posted in netritus on June 22nd, 2007 by scntfc

apparently this video has been on this site for a year or so now, but i only got link-ified to it within the last week or so. it is an hour and a half long geek-out/discussion between electronic music pioneer brian eno (arguably the inventor of ambient music and founder of the church of the long now) and video game creator and innovator will wright (the sims). the synergistic element of this is that brian eno is scoring will wright’s currently in development game ’spore’ using roughly the same generative concepts that wright is using to create the gameplay elements themselves. for those interested in any one of the following: generative music, video games, ambient music, nerdspeak, l-systems, or cellular automata (and who isn’t?), this is a great watch. particularly relevant to sea of hands as the northwest has so much game development in the area.
